Hi everyone! Some may notice this blog looks slightly different, I messed with the template this evening and lost some info and screwed up the layout a bit…. enough to bother me! So, I have been wanting to move the blog over to Blogger for a while and looks like tonight was the night!

Please come follow me at the new blog! I will leave the old content up on this blog.

Working on Today

My work space this morning. Working on the last commissioned plush, uploading pictures, blogging and drinking iced chai! I decided to creep out of bed at 7 and try to get some work done, it didn’t last long sadly. I’m hoping to get more work done today hopefully *cross fingers*.

I finished the main part of the panda hat yesterday and added pink trim last night. I love these colors, the yarn just makes me so happy. I’m hoping to get the ears done today and take some finished pictures of the hat too! The next one I make will defiantly be slightly bigger and in black and cream, I may give this one to Zoë after all… she loves it and cried when I had to take it off her, then I hid it behind the couch pillow. Eeep!

I really like the inside of the hat’s texture. I’m normally very picky about having the right side of my work show, but I may keep it turned inside out for this project. I’ve been wanting to make some plush using only slip stitches, I should really try it out and see how it looks. You can see a good example of what a slip stitched amigurumi here although I’m not sure if it was done using only slip stitches, it could be worked through the back loops only as well.

Lastly, I’m finishing up the last commissioned plush, a cream colored kitty! I’m really hoping to finish these two cats up today or at least this weekend! The pieces to the orange cat are already made, just waiting for the cream pieces. I want to sew and decorate them together, pictures will be up once I finish them! 🙂

Today’s Hooking (haha)

Woke up this morning to see a gigantic Rambo sized scratch across my little ones face (ahem, cat ran over her head while she slept). She’s ok, I just feel horrible about it. Then I decided to have a milky chocolate Cadbury  candy bar for breakfast… now I’m crocheting a panda hat for myself! So it’s been a different morning. I’m heading over to my parents house today with Zoë for a little family get together. My grandpa was visiting for a few months and is heading back to Iowa on Friday. Lets hope I can get some crochet done over there today and finish the last commissioned plush! Yay! I’m just about done with the big parts, all that is left is limbs, ears and a tail. Yay to quick pieces!

In other news, I have an awesome mini interview with Anna from Mohimochi Land coming up on Monday! I’m such a fan of her knitting, she is one of my inspirations to crochet tiny things to go with my plush toys. Also, after my giveaway winner announcement on Monday, I will start the process of moving my blog over to blogger! You can see a sneak peek of it now, I’m still testing out different layouts and posting. See it here! As much as I love WordPress and it’s easy way of posting, I’m just limited in customizing. I’ve been back and forth on the move for a while, WordPress is like my home, so it feels a bit odd to move blogs. I’m hoping you all will come follow me on there when I switch! I’ll be doing a giveaway again when I make the move! 🙂 🙂

INTERVIEW: Heidi Kenny from My Paper Crane!

Tell us a little about yourself…

Hello, I am Heidi Kenney a 33 year old plush maker living in Pennsylvania. My favorite color is green, and my favorite food is probably baked ziti. I am a thrift shop addict, and share a collection of Alice In Wonderland books with my husband. We have two boys ages 7 and 15.

What sort of crafts do you make and how long you have been making them?

I make a lot of plush, but I also dabble in other things too like little things made from cut paper, fabric design, and I used to even spin my own yarn.

What does your workspace look like and what is your work time schedule for the things you make?

My studio is the third floor of our house. it used to be an unfinished attic but half of it was finished off, and now it works perfectly for a studio. I have lots of shelves of fabric, bins of paper, and finished plush. It can get really messy when I am in the midst of a sewing frenzy, but since it is on the 3rd floor it is easy to just close the door.

Inspiration, where does yours come from? Any favorite artists or people/groups you admire?

My kids are always a big inspiration, they always like to add their input on anything new I am making. I love vintage toys, paper, and books. I have quite a ever growing collection of vintage children’s books.

Mary Blair, Henry Darger, and Richard Scarry, are amazingly inspirational. There are so many amazing people I’ve met through the shows I’ve done, and they all inspire me. Plush wise I love my friend Jenny Harada. Design wise husband and wife duo Somethings Hiding In Here (Shauna and Stephen) constantly blow me away. Painting and drawing Miss Emily from The Black Apple. Of course there are a million more, this list could go on and on!

Do you have any tips you could give to beginners that dabble in your sort of crafts?

Don’t worry so much about making mistakes, or your first few projects not coming out the way you want them to. Like all good things -practice makes perfect. Enjoy the process, and try not to stress yourself out. I think making things should be fun, relaxing, and should inspire you! If your stressing out over the finished project that can sometimes take away from the joy you might get from the process. Take the pressure off yourself to be good at something the first time you try it. Instead realize that you might make mistakes, but don’t let it stop you from trying again and again simply for the joy of making.

Where can we find you?

Fortune Cookie

I’m not one for fortune cookie fortunes. I always read them and laugh while tossing them out with the Chinese food bag. I got this little fortune from Panda Express the other day, read it, then sucked it up in the vacuum. The little words on this fortune stuck with me for a couple days, it really made sense to me and actually changed my views on my plush making and other things I do. So tonight I had the urge to see if it was still in the vacuum or if I had emptied it out yesterday. It was still in there so I dug through the mac & cheese bits and dried cat barf… yes, it was disgusting and I had to have it. Here it is and slightly cleaned up a bit. This fortune means the world to me right now, so much that I would run a string through it and wear it if I could.

Goal Stack

I know, another blog post… really? You just did a post?!

After my last post, it got me wondering how far behind I really was with my Palahiuk reads so ran to my bookshelf. I still have to grab Tell-All and Pygmy, not a big fan of the two books but I still want to read them. Also, I need to read Lullaby, Rant and Snuff… as well as these two other books I’ve been wanting to read, House of Leaves and Willful Creatures. I have had House of Leaves for a couple years now and always read the first part of the book, set it down for a few months, then pick it back up and reread the first part…. and repeat. I have never made it past a certain point in the book and I would love to finish this one! The book is amazing, it’s a work of art really. I read once that it took him around 10 years to write it, not sure if that’s true or not but I would believe it! The book is written so insanely awesome. Some parts have to be read while looking in a mirror, upside down, continued along the bottom of another page and even translated from other languages. If you haven’t heard of it, go get it!
